Residents urge lower speed limit and sidewalks on Nash Drive; board cites state limits

Several residents told the select board July 20 that Nash Drive is narrow, heavily used by children, and lacks safe sidewalks between Nash Drive and Meechan Street. Amanda Eaton described near-misses and a mailbox strike last year, and asked that the speed limit be lowered from 25 to 15 mph and that sidewalks or crossing treatments be considered.
The board explained that under current state rules a posted speed below 25 mph typically applies only within a designated downtown district and that Nash Drive appears to lie outside that district on the town map. "You can't have a speed limit below 25 unless it's in a designated downtown district," a board member said. The board discussed short-term enforcement by the sheriff and adding a radar speed sign, and encouraged exploring grant funding for sidewalks; Mark Barone suggested a lighted push-button crosswalk as a lower-cost option near the post office and the board agreed to pursue options and bring the sidewalk/Depot Street cleanup issue back to the project manager.
