"In order to meet the required 4% we are respectfully requesting an additional 167,000," the school official said, adding the match would unlock more than $300,000 in state funds. The schools' representative warned that failing to fund the match could hamper retention and require hiring and training costly replacements: "it costs about $11,000 per person to train new staff every year in addition to their salary."
Board members pressed on trade-offs in the county budget. One member asked whether other divisions might also return for additional funding and whether the county could cover the request without drawing further on reserves. A separate board member noted concern about equity across departments and the strain on the county’s fund balance if more supplements are approved. The board ultimately moved and approved the supplemental allocation to the school budget.
The board's vote followed a short public discussion during which members emphasized the need to weigh employee retention against long-term fiscal constraints. The schools will rework budgets and seek formal school-board and supervisor approval to access state match funding before implementing the pay change.
