Commission pauses review of Boston Gas portable LNG plan at Kimball Farm pending Natural Heritage review

Representatives for Boston Gas Company described plans for a seasonal portable liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility at Kimball Farm that would require a gas main, paving along an existing gravel accessway, and a 4-foot crushed-stone pathway near wetlands and an intermittent stream.
Sam Kefferstan of BSC Group said Natural Heritage has identified priority habitat for salamanders and turtles and that a MESA checklist has been submitted and is pending determination. Kefferstan described which portions of the work are exempt from the Wetlands Protection Act and which are not; Salem and Commissioner Fahle questioned whether the project is being segmented and whether a Stormwater Management Permit is required for the repaving work. Kefferstan believed the project did not meet the threshold for a SWM permit. Ross Kass, a local resident, suggested an alternative location for LNG components. The Commission continued the hearing to May 13 to await Natural Heritage determinations and additional information.
