Public Works moves into new facility; swap shop has diverted about four tons

Public Works told the Selectboard the town’s new facility is now insured and the department has started moving equipment and supplies. Work continues on heat-pump installation in the municipal building and the downtown waterline — a pipe hung across the bridge — which staff expect to finish and clear construction from downtown this week.
The Public Works update included early metrics from the community "swap shop," which staff said has saved about four tons of material from being sent to regional facilities. "They're estimating that the swap shop has saved about, so far, 4 tons of dirt going into Louisville," the staff member reported, adding that tracking will continue and staff will try to quantify the diversion as a percentage of total tonnage. The board asked how tonnage is measured and requested follow-up with the transfer-station tracking data.
Members also discussed logistics for moving a salt shed and placement constraints due to wetlands setbacks; staff said locating the shed next to an existing outbuilding at the rear of the new facility appears feasible and could save roughly $30,000 in paving costs compared with the originally considered location at the front of the site.
