Business leaders and residents urge commissioners not to politicize Hardee County's economic-development authority

Dozens of residents and local business leaders spoke during the public-comment portion of Thursday's workshop. Many described recent projects and the IDA's role in attracting jobs and said absorbing the IDA into the commission would diminish the county's ability to recruit privately held companies.
Chris Esardi, an IDA board member, said the resolution "is clearly a disruptive style of change" and urged commissioners to seek factual information and open dialogue rather than structural upheaval. Benjamin Gibson, a longtime appraiser, said he is "opposed to this resolution" and recounted an example where confidentiality concerns harmed a prospective relocation.
Other speakers echoed those points. Jessica Newman, Main Street director, described the IDA's pivot toward downtown and community-focused projects, while Lee Michael, identified as the current IDA chairman, said the resolution would "poison that tree" of community economic development and asked commissioners to withdraw it.
