Council members spent a substantial portion of the May 28 meeting reviewing budget priorities for fiscal year 2026–2027 after property values were reassessed in 2026. Councilmember Steve Chapman presented calculations showing an approximate $33,000,000 increase in overall property values in the city and discussed probable revenue under various property tax-rate scenarios.
Mayor Sarah Thompson said she would like council to consider the compensating rate plus 4% to help cover needs in police and fire departments. Thompson said former City Treasurer Steve Bodde was hired on a contract basis to assist with budget preparation. The mayor listed proposed budgeted items including additional employees, police and fire department improvements, road repairs, replacement of the city building roof, street light repairs in the business district, park improvements, and community events. Council discussed camera upgrades in Ludlow Memorial Park and agreed to budget up to $8,000 and consult with Chief Beck on appropriate camera systems for police use.
