Alex Saywers, the elementary and junior high principal, reported to the board that building staff were prepared and that open house turnout was strong ahead of the first day of classes.
“We are looking forward to starting school tomorrow!” Saywers said, noting nearly 100 percent teacher attendance at open house events and that the school ran out of extra ice cream purchased for families. He said enrollment stood at about 441 including transitional kindergarten (421 without TK), with 273 K‑5 students, 149 junior high students and 20 TK students; final counts will be confirmed on count day next week.
Saywers listed staffing changes: Nick Harkness will teach junior high PE and Applied Physics following Kipp Sims’s retirement, and Logan Terry will take the 5–12 band/choir role replacing Morgan Pendon. He also said last year’s work on the school improvement plan reduced office discipline interventions by 25% and that the school will pursue a three‑year plan emphasizing ELA, math and classroom environment improvements.
He described professional development taken over the summer, including Solution Tree PLC training and a Wonders curriculum training for K‑5 teachers with full staff attendance. The principal thanked LCEF for sponsoring classroom materials for teachers.
The board did not take separate action on these items during the meeting; administrators said enrollment and plan progress will continue to be tracked.
