Issaquah student showcases Bharatanatyam as Arts Commission welcomes YAL participants

The Arts Commission set aside time to welcome participants in its Youth Arts Leadership program as part of Arts Education Month. Staff member Karina said the program gives cohort members a chance to observe board meetings and learn about public arts funding decisions.
Student Maitreyi Kumarin introduced herself as a junior at Issaquah High School and described a long practice in Indian classical dance. "I've been practicing an Indian classical art form called Bharatanatyam. It's a type of classical dance, and I've been doing it since I was 3," Kumarin said, thanking the Commission for the opportunity to observe.
Commissioners thanked the youth participants and noted communications staff support for promoting Arts Education Month. The Commission framed the youth observation as an educational opportunity rather than a decision-making item.
