Claudia Castro Luna reads bilingual poems on place; memoir due this fall

Claudia Castro Luna, introduced by Poet Laureate Derek Sheffield, read a sequence of poems that mixed Spanish and English and emphasized the natural world and place. Before one selection she said, "I am a different person in Spanish than I'm in English," a point she returned to in bilingual passages and in the poems about trees that closed her set.
Sheffield noted that Castro Luna served as Seattle's civic poet laureate and said her newest book, a memoir entitled The Flowers Along the Way, is forthcoming this fall. The reading included short, image-driven pieces and concluded with audience applause and a brief transition back to Sheffield.
