Commissioners approve paid internship for public defender office; $18/hour from supplemental funds

The Board approved an agreement to pay Matthias Webb $18 per hour as a summer intern in the Saint Joseph County Public Defender’s Office.
Jeff Kimmel, chief public defender, said Webb has worked unpaid all summer and is now certified to appear in misdemeanor calendar court. Kimmel said the office intends to pay the intern out of a Title IV supplemental fund and that the office receives reimbursements for many expenditures from the state at roughly a 40 percent rate. "We're looking to pay him $18 an hour, which I think is a fair rate," Kimmel said.
Kimmel apologized for the delay in bringing the item for approval and said he believed prior arrangements had been handled differently with the auditor. The board approved the internship by motion.
