Residents urge action on crosswalk safety as traffic study finds average speed of 25 mph

During the public-comment portion of the Nov. 13 meeting, resident Rachel Doellman said drivers frequently fail to stop at the crosswalk on Logan’s Way at Elm Street when she walks her child to school and asked council to address the problem.
City Administrative Officer Scott Smith said he contacted the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet previously about installing a curb bump-out to improve crosswalk visibility and that he would contact KYTC again. Police Chief Bart Beck noted a recent traffic flow study found the average speed in the city to be 25 miles per hour but that the study did not include stop-sign compliance data.
Resident Brad Banks suggested short-term measures such as restricting parking near the crosswalk and placing flags in five-gallon buckets to increase driver awareness; Mayor Thompson suggested a yellow stripe painted on both sides of the crosswalk.
Council did not adopt a specific remedy at the meeting; staff will follow up with KYTC and return with recommended actions.
