Health department warns of increased rabies positives; free clinic set for Sept. 12

Washington County public-health staff told the committee the county has observed a recent uptick in animals testing positive for rabies and announced an upcoming free rabies clinic on Sept. 12.
"We have 3 specimens test positive in a week, which is high for us," the director said, reporting two raccoons and one bat among the week's positives. The presenter added that 37 specimens had been sent for testing so far this year and that four had returned positive in total to date.
Staff said the department has been fielding more public inquiries and emphasized education on how to handle wildlife exposures. The director encouraged residents to sign up for the free clinic and said the department coordinated a press release with public safety.
