Town opens 1976 Bicentennial time capsule; buries Semiquincentennial capsule for 2076
Summary
West Windsor unearthed the 1976 Bicentennial time capsule on July 4; some items showed water damage and were moved to the West Windsor Historical Society. A Semiquincentennial capsule (U.S. 250th) was buried near the ABS flagpole with a contents list to be stored in the Town Hall vault until 2076.
The Selectboard heard a final presentation by Town Administrator Matt Frederick about two community time-capsule projects. The Bicentennial capsule, buried in 1976, was opened July 4 in front of residents and school officials; although some items suffered water damage, recovered artifacts were displayed at the America 250 Exhibit and later transferred to the West Windsor Historical Society for preservation.
Albert Bridge School principal Ray Shannis (principal when the 50-year capsule was buried) and Nancy Smith, a student-teacher who helped spearhead the original project, participated in the opening. Separately, the Semiquincentennial time capsule marking the U.S. 250th was filled with submissions from residents and local organizations, buried near the ABS flagpole, and will remain sealed until the U.S. Tricentennial in 2076; an envelope listing the contents and directions will be placed in the Town Hall vault for the next 50 years.
