Board adopts new social media framework, limits direct commenting on district posts

The board approved a new social media framework intended to make district communications clearer and safer.
Tom walked the board through the revised policy and a community-feedback effort that included more than 40 volunteers, the equity committee and staff reviews. He said the framework clarifies that the district will not post content that violates existing board policies and that the district will not allow general public commenting on district posts as part of a legal-counsel-reviewed approach to reduce profane or slanderous public comments. "...the district will post content that is, age appropriate, proper decorum, considering the students' ages... consistent with the curriculum, and serves an educational purpose," Tom said. He also noted a link to required state curricular mandates would be included so the district's posts align with legally required content.
Board discussion focused on implementation and whether the communications director would consult others on difficult cases; Tom and others said the communications director would work within the framework and consult supervisors when needed. The motion to approve the framework and the proposed 2026–27 post schedule passed on a roll-call vote.
