La Cygne adopts 2011 budget after workshop; tax levy rises to cover services

After extended review at a budget workshop, the La Cygne City Council adopted the proposed 2011 budget at a public hearing on Aug. 25. Council passed Resolutions Nos. 338 and 339 to move funds from the equipment reserve and capital improvement accounts into the general fund as part of the plan; the council also adopted Ordinance No. 1389 attesting to the necessary increase in tax revenue.
City Clerk Gary Mahon said the budget required replenishment measures because valuation had dropped and several departments requested additional operating funds. "Transfers of $40,000 would have to be made from equipment reserve and capital improvement back into the general fund," the clerk reported during the April–August process. The council approved the budget after the required public notice and hearing, and the ordinance to allow the tax levy increase passed on a 5-0 vote.
