La Cygne accepts Thayer family donation for small downtown park; Chamber to manage development

The La Cygne City Council accepted a donation of land from the Thayer family for use as a neighborhood park. Robin Cornejo, speaking for the Chamber of Commerce, described a 7,600-square-foot triangular parcel at Broadway and Market and outlined a preliminary proposal for park features and a shared maintenance plan between the Chamber and the city.
Council discussed tax-exempt status and liability. The city attorney noted title would revert to the Thayer family if the lot ceased to be used for park purposes; the city’s tort claim statutes would provide indemnity for some volunteer activities. Council voted to accept the donation and asked the Chamber, the water committee and city staff to proceed with formal plans and an inter-party agreement on responsibilities.
Cornejo said volunteers have stepped forward to help develop the space and that early work will rely on donated labor and materials. Council members urged a formal maintenance schedule and an agreement that clarifies city ownership, insurance coverage, and long-term responsibilities.
