La Cygne accepts a used pumper, scraps older engine and opens new station

The La Cygne Fire Department moved from equipment upgrades to station completion over 2008. In late spring the council agreed to buy a used 1968 Ford pumper from the City of Garnett for $4,000 and to scrap the 1974 Pierce, reversing an earlier plan to rebuild the Pierce; the council recorded the purchase and the rescission of the prior repair authorization during a special meeting. Council also approved several equipment items including a donated minipumper and new face masks paid for in part by department funds and donations.
Fire Chief Doug Lloyd reported a year‑end call volume of 53 in 2007 and led the department through equipment reviews and a multi-department ribbon‑cutting for a new industrial‑park station. Lloyd later resigned as fire chief citing health concerns; Assistant Chief Dan Nasalroad was appointed and the department named Scott Stainbrook assistant chief. The department actively pursued federal assistance (AFG) and state grants; Chief Lloyd and others reported awarded grants and equipment donations, such as six SCBA packs donated by the Garnett Fire Department.
Council motions included accepting donated 1987 equipment and authorizing up to $1,500 to purchase hose and a reel for a newly acquired mini pumper, and later contracting to buy the 1968 pumper for $4,000. The department also coordinated regional training (the state fire school was hosted at La Cygne in July) and requested recurring budget/operational support for the new station.
