La Cygne and Linn County to share new rural fire station under 10-year lease

La Cygne City Council approved actions in late 2007 to place city equipment in the new Linn County rural fire station being built in the La Cygne Industrial Park and to fund associated site work. Council reviewed bids for concrete and for water/sewer hookups and authorized work needed to make the bay and utilities ready for city apparatus.
Bids opened in November were awarded to Pemberton Excavation for the exterior concrete work (accepted by the council) and to K & L Backhoe for sewer and water service (council accepted the lowest responsive bids and included specified options). Council also appointed a city inspector to oversee construction details for the city’s portion of the work.
The intergovernmental lease with Linn County was negotiated in the fall to allow the city to occupy two bays in the county facility. After discussion the council agreed to a 10-year term (the city cited its initial capital outlay on site work and estimated annual utility running costs in its decision). The lease requires coordination on maintenance, utilities and operating protocols and includes provisions for reassessment if either party wants to add building work. Council members said the shared station model preserves local equipment access for La Cygne while creating regional efficiencies in training and apparatus housing.
