La Cygne council hires James Dean as new police chief

The La Cygne City Council voted to hire James Dean as the city’s police chief at its Oct. 17 meeting, authorizing the appointment to take effect immediately after required pre-employment steps. The motion to hire passed unanimously.
Council members framed the appointment as a step to restore a steady leadership presence at the police department after a year that included officer turnover and interim assignments. “We need continuity for the department and someone to rebuild day-to-day operations,” one council member said during the Oct. 17 meeting. Dean was introduced to the public at the meeting and the council asked city staff to complete background and employment checks before a start date was announced.
Dean will join a municipal staff that, during 2007, managed multiple infrastructure and public-safety priorities, from flood response to KDOT coordination for the K-152 corridor. The council also approved training requests for chief and officers to meet state continuing-education requirements earlier in the year. City Hall staff said the new chief’s start date and a follow-up orientation would be announced after pre-employment clearance.
The city clerk will publish the effective start date following completion of the required checks.
