Town staff and the Selectboard reviewed an after-action plan on July 23 following an error that affected about a third of tax bills. Callie Hamdy, MJ and Maria reprinted and restuffed nearly 300 corrected bills in the days after the mistake.
Tommy O’Connor said he consulted with New England Municipal Resource Center (NEMRC); while there was no single pinpointed cause, NEMRC proposed a plan to mitigate future errors. The Selectboard discussed setting an earlier internal deadline for municipal tax-rate decisions to avoid last-minute changes tied to school-tax timing and to ensure staff have clear messaging ready when the tax rate is set.
The board recommended staff provide a clear statement to the public about the final tax rate when it is set and to adopt the NEMRC recommendations to strengthen the billing workflow. No motion was made to alter fiscal policy at this meeting.
