States Attorney narrows violence-intervention pilot to Rock Island PD; requests mixed funding for $115,000 contract

States Attorney Dora Villareal presented a revised Group Violence Intervention (GVI) proposal during the committee meeting, asking approval for a 12-month, $115,000 contract to work specifically with the Rock Island Police Department.
Villareal explained the change from the original plan (which had intended to work with all county law enforcement agencies) and said the narrower pilot will focus on the Rock Island Police Department given recent increases in gun violence. She proposed funding the contract with 33% from the opioid settlement fund, 35% from the General Fund and 35% from the Drug Forfeiture Fund. Villareal said the cost is down about $30,000 from the original plan and that Ms. Ott, the proposed consultant, will attend the Committee of the Whole to answer questions.
Committee members approved the motion by voice vote. Villareal said the pilot will include training and community-facing strategies with probation, judges and community services with the aim of creating a model that could later expand to other agencies.
