New owner and college differ over stockade fence vs. vegetation

Prospective owner Joel Wollum told the Planning Commission he would prefer to install vegetation rather than the 6-foot solid stockade fence the President and Fellows of Middlebury College planned to erect along the new property line. Wollum called a stockade "unattractive" and said parents should supervise children rather than rely on fencing.
Commissioner Gale Hurd and other commissioners raised safety concerns, saying a solid fence would prevent children playing in the 50 Sheep Farm Road yard from accidentally entering the storage-building property where college trucks operate. Commissioners advised Wollum to consult Barnard & Gervais surveyor Mike Gaines to clarify how far the fence extends from the Town right-of-way; Gale offered to send minutes and related records to Wollum, which he declined.
