Roland Deo, the Tollway's chief of maintenance and traffic, told the Tollway Board on Aug. 21 that the agency expands patrols during extreme weather to protect motorists and speed lifesaving help. He said the Tollway runs dedicated hot‑weather and cold‑weather road patrols, operates bright yellow help trucks for roadside service, and fields a 24/7 ‘‘999’’ roadside assistance line.
Deo gave operational counts to the board: last year the Tollway launched 26 hot‑weather patrols and made nearly 2,300 contacts; so far this year it has run 29 hot‑weather patrols and made more than 2,700 contacts. He said cold‑weather patrols also increase during extreme conditions—17 such patrols last year (about 1,100 contacts) and 22 this year (more than 400 contacts). He told the board the help trucks made more than 28,000 contacts last year and the 24/7 999 service fielded nearly 45,000 calls.
"If you're on the road and you need help, we'll be there," Deo said, urging stranded drivers to call 999, give roadway and direction details, turn on emergency lights, and remain in their vehicles until responders arrive. The briefing framed the patrols as both a safety measure and a customer-service program that builds public trust in Tollway operations.
The presentation was delivered during the meeting's safety-message portion and the board acknowledged the work before moving on to the regular agenda.
