The Harvey County Commission reviewed Scorpius Industries, LLC’s annual tax-exemption compliance and voted to certify that the company met the exemption terms.
County Clerk Rick Piepho presented the exemption review. Owner Shane Denson described Scorpius as a small fabrication and design firm near Hesston that lost a major customer after constructing the building covered by the exemption; he said he is finding new customers and is trying to hire, with an aim of growing to roughly 10–12 employees. Denson asked the commission to reconsider providing a 100% per-year exemption (rather than the scheduled graduated reduction), saying the exemption currently helps as he rebuilds the customer base.
Beth Shelton, Harvey County EDC Director, explained the exemption recommendation process and said the EDC uses a scoring system based on expected new jobs and total investment to determine recommended exemption levels; she said reconsideration would likely require additional investment or employment commitments. The commission voted to certify Scorpius Industries, LLC as compliant and authorized the chair to sign.
Why this matters: The graduated exemption affects Scorpius’ near-term tax liability during early years of operation and is linked to county economic-development incentives intended to balance tax revenue with job creation and investment.
