At the Harvey County Board of Commissioners’ March 10 meeting, members of the public raised concerns about property valuations performed by the County Appraiser.
Halstead resident Brandon Crawford told the commission his property's valuation increased roughly 17.5% and said a neighbor reported a smaller increase; he added his valuation exceeds a recent bank appraisal. Crawford said he also sees inconsistent valuations across other properties he owns. Another resident, Amy Douvier, told the board that other individuals had approached her about seemingly excessive valuation increases.
Commissioners advised residents with valuation concerns to follow the appeal process outlined in the notices mailed by the appraiser and to schedule a hearing with the Appraiser’s office. The board did not take formal action on the valuations during the meeting.
Why this matters: Property valuations affect tax bills and are a statutory process overseen by the county appraiser; the board recommended that concerned residents use the formal appeal process so adjustments, if merited, can be reviewed in the Appraiser’s office.
