Butler County adopts AI use policy for employees

The Butler County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted AR-26-01, an Artificial Intelligence Utilization Policy for county employees during its May 5 meeting. County Administrator Will Johnson told the Board the policy "establishes governance, safeguards, and acceptable use standards to ensure AI is used responsibly, securely, transparently, and in compliance with applicable laws and County policies." The commission voted 5-0 to adopt the policy.
Johnson said the policy is intended to improve efficiency and service delivery while mitigating risks such as data breaches, legal liability, and bias. The policy sets a governance framework, requires transparency and privacy protections for resident data, and instructs staff to review the policy on a biannual basis as technology evolves. Commissioners did not propose amendments during the meeting; Commissioner Dan Woydziak made the motion to approve and Commissioner Jeff Masterson seconded.
