Fair board seeks larger 'Dollar Barn' at county fairgrounds; youth group received $5,000 grant

Terry Selzer, introduced by the chair as the fair board manager, described a proposal by County Council of Young Leaders to replace the existing, undersized "Dollar Barn" concession structure at the county fairgrounds. Selzer said the current 12-by-12 building lacks ventilation and insulation, forcing freezers and coolers outside during events; the group proposes a new 16-by-16 unit that would sit on skids so it can be relocated. "They did receive $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Jackson County to start them off," Selzer said, and staff discussed plans to insulate the new unit and set it on cement skids rather than resting directly on the ground.

Selzer said the project is a 4-H service project and that students on the team would have construction experience opportunities; he said the fair board supports the plan and the county's insurance would cover student volunteers during the build. Board members asked about insurance coverage, the building footprint and whether the old structure would be repurposed or sold; Selzer said options include moving the old building to storage use or selling it if not reused. The board received the informational presentation and thanked Selzer and the students for bringing the proposal forward.
