Council members said the town’s ban includes an exception for written permits, which the council can issue for specific events with safety stipulations. During the meeting, a council member noted the town could issue an event-specific permit for the July 24 celebration and require safety measures: “We could issue a permit for the 24th celebration at such a location for such time,” the council member said, adding that a hose or two 5-gallon buckets should be present.
The council clarified that Stage 1 allows some contained fires in established campgrounds with precautions, but Stage 2 — expected from the state Friday — “is no open fires of any kind,” a council member said. Mayor Selene Richins noted that under Stage 2, typical backyard grills or campfires would be prohibited unless the council or county issues a written permit. Council members discussed asking event organizers to move or alter planned activities to comply with the new restrictions.
Council members emphasized practical precautions for permitted events: keep fuel off the ground or not stacked next to the fire pit and ensure water access is available. The council agreed it would coordinate permit issuance and follow Wasatch County’s lead on changing restrictions as conditions evolve.
