County discusses expanded vehicle telematics with estimated $48,000 annual cost

Assistant Administrator and Finance Director Ryan Adkison led a work session explaining vehicle telematics technology — GPS, vehicle diagnostic sensors and cellular connectivity — and how the county currently uses Verizon Reveal in Department on Aging vans and selected Public Works and Sheriff’s Office vehicles. Adkison said telematics provides benefits for driver coaching, liability protection, dispatching, preventive maintenance and fleet planning.
Adkison estimated the proposed rollout would cost "approximately $48,000 per year" for vehicles driven daily or nearly daily, with GPS-only units for regular fleet vehicles and additional camera units for higher-liability vehicles. The board asked staff to proceed with the implementation approach and return with policy/procedure guidance and more exact contract costs.
