Harvey County approves $148,988 KDHE grant application for public health programs

The Harvey County Commission voted unanimously March 3 to authorize the chair and the health department director to sign a Kansas Department of Health and Environment Aid-to-Local grant application for State Fiscal Year 2027. Health Department Director Lynnette Redington said the county is requesting $148,988.68 across four programs: State Formula, Immunization Action Program (IAP), Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) and Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR).
Redington told the commission the funds will help maintain vaccination access, preparedness activities and chronic-disease prevention initiatives. The application breaks the total into program amounts of $60,904 (State Formula), $6,892 (IAP), $27,259 (PHEP) and $53,933.68 (CDRR); the CDRR grant carries a 25% local match requirement which the director said will be covered by staff time. Commissioner Don Schroeder made the motion to approve and Becky Reimer seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
The board directed staff to track and report the administrative time and costs associated with the grants’ reporting and compliance requirements, as requested by Commissioner Reimer. The health department also publicized a March 26 poverty-simulation session and a housing-access report during the meeting; those outreach activities are intended to help target the grant-funded programs.
