Abilene board orders three demolitions and one penalty in April meeting

The Abilene Board of Building Standards conducted its April meeting, heard staff presentations on four condemned properties and took formal action on each.
Staff (Ricky Wright, property maintenance inspector) presented three cases for demolition—1741 Anderson St. (case 25-001890), 833 Nelson Dr. (case 25-002554), and 1110 Houston St. (case 26-000192)—recommending orders that each owner demolish or appeal to district court within 30 days. The board adopted each recommendation by roll call; staff cited inactive utilities, condemnation affidavits and, in one case, an owner listed as deceased and a spouse who later ceased responding.
The board also adopted staff’s recommendation to assess civil penalties against the owner of 450 Peach St. (case 24-000346) at $25 per day for 348 days, totaling $8,700. During the meeting the Chair reiterated board policy that owners must secure buildings, keep lots clean and mowed within 10 days of notice or the city may perform the work and bill the owner, and that appeals must be filed in district court within 30 days of the board’s decision.
All motions carried on unanimous roll-call votes recorded during the meeting. The board closed by thanking staff for their work on difficult cases and adjourned.
