The county administrator reported that a consultant engineer has been procured to evaluate a sinkhole near the Centre County Correctional Facility and that staff have contacted excavation companies for quotes on time-and-materials work. An exploratory probe reportedly reached at least 20 feet without bottoming out, and the administrator said preliminary work will likely require closing part of the interior roadway to the prison.
The administrator said the county is operating under an emergency order to address the issue and that the scope and cost are unknown. Commissioners thanked staff for the quick response and asked staff to continue updates as more information and contractor quotes become available.
