Natural resources staff told the board it is burning season. Darin Voss led controlled burns at Lost Nation and McAndrews and planned another burn the following day; long burn days can generate comp time for staff. Mowing across east and west districts has started and will continue into October, and several seasonal and maintenance hires are beginning over the coming weeks.
Staff also reported water‑system changes: the county switched from Culligan to Kirby Water Conditioning for softeners and iron curtains. At Eden Valley Nature Center an injection pump was installed at the Iowa DNR's request; that system requires daily chlorine testing. Several campground loops are affected by high water: Sherman Park lower loop and Rock Creek lower loop are closed for flooding and Rock Creek electrical posts were pulled; Walnut Grove is open with water at the edge but receding.
