Department details fleet outfitting plans and upcoming community-safety events
Summary
Officials said nine new cruisers are being outfitted and previewed a back-to-school car-seat clinic (Aug. 13) and a fundraiser for Connecticut Special Olympics (Sept. 16); officers will also assist at community-safety education sessions starting Aug. 6.
Department staff told commissioners the department has nine new patrol vehicles (eight Tahoes and one Silverado for K-9 use) in hand and being outfitted with lights, radios, in-car computers and cameras. Outfitting per cruiser was estimated at roughly $18,000 and the department expects to begin rolling vehicles out in early fall.
Staff also previewed a schedule of community events: a back-to-school car-seat clinic on Aug. 13 at McMurray Field offering free car seats and installation help, a Sept. 16 fundraiser at Cuco’s Nest benefiting Connecticut Special Olympics, and a recurring community safety-education series hosted at the Old Saybrook Police Department beginning Aug. 6 that will cover fraud scams and consumer-protection issues affecting older residents.
Commissioners suggested flyers and broader outreach to older residents and to neighborhood groups; staff said they had created a flyer and would post on town social media and the town website.
