Sgt. says King County Sheriff staffing shortfalls limit contracted patrols to Beaux Arts Village

Sgt. Robert Nishimura of the King County Sheriff’s Department told the Beaux Arts Village Town Council on May 12 that the department is operating “at critically low staffing levels and is only at the 60th percentile for staffing.” He said that translates into fewer officers available to patrol the county’s roughly 700 square miles and makes it harder to guarantee the contracted patrols the Town expects.
Mayor Aletha Howes noted the Town appears not to be receiving its contracted number of daily patrols, and Sgt. Nishimura confirmed that low staffing is likely the cause: officers assigned to the area are often called to other parts of the county. The council did not take formal action but heard the update as part of routine public safety reporting.
The report offered a concrete measure (60th percentile staffing) and an operational impact (reduced availability of the 7–8 officers currently assigned versus an ideal 12–14). Councilmembers did not propose a specific response during that meeting; follow-up would be a matter for future council or intergovernmental discussion.
