Candace Hill briefed the commission on plans to apply for FEMA BRIC funding to build a safe room on county‑owned land in Ashville. Hill told commissioners the BRIC application requires a 25% match and that it is their understanding the land value itself can count toward that match; she said the county must submit materials to the state by July 2 and estimated the safe room budget at around $165,000 based on past projects.
"That grant will require a 25% match, and it's our understanding that the land cost itself, the land value can be that match," Hill said. She asked for a resolution to accompany the grant application showing county agreement to the match; the commission voted in favor of taking action to provide the necessary resolution. Staff and the chairman noted the budget details will be finalized after design quotes are returned and county attorney review if required.
