The Planning & Zoning Commission voted to recommend that City Council adopt an amendment to UDC section 3.4.9 (pools, patios, accessory buildings and structures) requiring that accessory structures match the primary structure’s materials, colors and roof pitch even when those structures are not visible from the street.
Staff said the change raises the overall quality of accessory buildings and structures by ensuring consistency with the main building. The city manager would retain authority to approve exceptions in Agriculture and R‑1 districts where compatibility with surrounding properties and land use can be demonstrated. Commissioners asked how the city standard intersects with Homeowners’ Association (HOA) approvals; staff said HOAs may have stricter standards but cannot be less strict than the city’s UDC requirement.
After discussion the commission recommended the amendment to council. The proposed change is intended to produce higher‑quality accessory structures while allowing case‑by‑case exceptions through the city manager in specified zones.
