Ruth, representing Veterans Affairs, briefed supervisors on February activity and upcoming events. She said the office checked status on 41 claims in February (12 decisions, two partial decisions), filed 10 new claims and handled eight appeals. "We had a total for February of 270 interactions," Ruth said, and she reported 431 veterans or eligible dependents receiving $876,344 in benefits (January figure). She also said there were 97 open claims, 61 of which the office had filed.
Ruth outlined training and outreach plans — including local claims clinics and attendance at state and national training — and told the board that the supervisors previously voted to hold elections for commission chair and secretary every other year beginning July 2026, so the commission will hold elections that month. She also noted Senate File 2466, which addresses county veteran service offices, passed the Iowa Senate on March 10 and is moving to the House.
