Commission recommends approval of oversized carport replacement at 1600 S. College

The Decatur Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval of a specific-use permit for a replacement carport at 1600 South College after staff said the structure exceeds the code's allowable length and height but will be rebuilt in its original footprint.
Lisa Hannan, Planning Director, told the commission the applicants are seeking permission because the proposed carport is larger than the code permits: "It is approximately 24 feet in width, 60 feet in length, and 13 feet in height," she said, noting the code allows a 24-foot length and 12-foot height without a special permit. Hannan said the prior carport existed when the current owner purchased the property in 2024 and was destroyed in the recent winter ice storm.
The commission discussed whether the remote commissioner on Zoom would be able to participate. After a motion to recommend approval was made and seconded, the Chair called the vote and the commission passed the recommendation unanimously. The recommendation will be forwarded to City Council for final action; building permits are required before construction begins.
