Commissioners raised concerns about juvenile access to weapons and a rise in assaults, asking what preventive measures the department is using. Acting Lieutenant Ceramic said the department has increased visible patrols in areas where juveniles congregate and is targeting direct patrols in apartment complexes and neighborhood streets.
A commissioner asked whether there are specific programs targeting juveniles. Chief Anderson said some outreach is done by local nonprofits and county units, and that buyback programs and outreach events are adult-focused. "We're not really — it's more of a reactive thing if we see the gun or see the person showing signs of carrying a weapon," Acting Lieutenant Ceramic said. Commissioners discussed the potential for nonprofit-led interventions and asked staff to explore whether county or outside partners can provide youth-specific programming.
