Council adopts first reading to allow limited automobile sales in B‑3 zoning

Canfield City Council moved to adopt on first reading an ordinance (1 1 5 1.06, letter p) that would conditionally permit limited automobile sales in B‑3 business zoning districts.
At the public hearing staff explained the change would allow only limited sales where vehicle repair or other lawful business operations remain the primary use. "This specifically would allow limited automobile sales in B 3 zoning districts. Shall not be the only or primary use of the subject property," a planning staff member said during the hearing. The staff presentation underscored that vehicles offered for sale must be owned by the business, exclude franchise dealerships and auctions, and must comply with state licensing requirements.
Council members asked whether trailers were included; planning staff responded the trailer issue is regulated separately and is not part of this ordinance. After discussion council moved to dispense with additional readings under section 4.05 of the city charter and advanced the ordinance upon its first reading by roll-call vote.
The ordinance will now proceed according to the city's legislative schedule; council members said the change is intended to allow modest sales by existing businesses while preserving the primary commercial character of B‑3 properties.
