Chief Schlager presented a proposal to enter a lease agreement with Enterprise Fleet Management to replace aging staff vehicles. Schlager said the department currently budgets about $160,000 a year for staff vehicles; the proposed leasing arrangement would begin with eight model-year-2020-or-older vehicles, with estimated resale proceeds of about $101,000 and a down payment of $80,000 to apply toward the lease.
An Enterprise representative described the program as a tool to minimize maintenance costs and improve resale outcomes: "Newer vehicles naturally just cost less to maintain, and they sell much better," the representative said, offering to connect the department with other local governments using the program. A committee member moved to authorize the chief to investigate, finalize and move forward as warranted with the lease program per the resolution in the packet; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
Members asked about insurance impacts and vehicle counts (the department has 14 vehicles total and the program would start with eight); the Enterprise representative said newer vehicles may change insurance slightly but bring safety benefits and overall lower total costs.
