Kim Vincent, a resident, told the Amarillo Park and Recreation Board that an Amarillo College official had publicly described the Rick Klein baseball fields as unsafe and asked the board to place the issue on a future agenda for investigation.
"If you play on that field especially in the infield that you would be taking your life in your own hands," Vincent said, quoting the college comment and asking whether the board agreed. Parks staff responded that Kids Inc. is the lessee and is currently doing infield work at Rick Klein. James Stowe, parks staff, said, "Kids Inc is doing the maintenance and all that stuff there," and noted staff has performed inspections in the past with the Panhandle Sports Youth Foundation and would schedule further inspection if requested.
Board members agreed the concern deserved a follow-up and proposed placing the field condition and a potential inspection on a future agenda. Staff suggested either scheduling an inspection within the next month or inviting maintenance managers (for example, Mr. Lackey) to report to the board. The board did not take a formal vote on the issue during the meeting.
Next steps: staff will coordinate with the lessee and maintenance partners and either perform a physical inspection or bring an informational presentation to the board at a later meeting.
