Commission discusses disposal of whole tires at landfill; no policy change yet

Public Works Director Cutis Mader led a work session on landfill tire disposal, describing multiple operational problems when whole tires are accepted: they can shift when buried and resurface, become lodged between the compactor sheepsfoot drum and scraper bar causing damage or failure, entangle around drums requiring manual cutting, increase downtime and labor, and present serious firefighting challenges if they ignite. Mader reported that staff surveyed peer counties and landfill operators and found many do not accept whole tires or transport them elsewhere for recycling.
Contractor Bob Cook of C Wave Co told the board that "with the increase in tire fees will force him to drastically raise his rates for his customers if he keep his contract with the Landfill." Commissioners asked staff to track daily tire counts and sizes; Mr. Mader said staff can do a daily log and will present findings at the next work session. No action was taken at this meeting.
