Council holds first reading on SUP to replace oversized carport at 1600 S. College Ave

City Planning Director Lisa Hannan presented the staff report for a specific-use permit to replace an existing residential carport at 1600 South College Avenue and described the structure as "approximately 24 feet wide, 60 feet in length, and 13 feet in height," larger than the code limit for height and length. Hannan told the council the carport was an existing structure that was destroyed by the 2024 winter storm "Fern" and the current owner requests replacement in the same location; 17 property owners were notified by mail and staff reported no responses opposing the request.
Hannan said the proposal meets setback requirements and that Planning & Zoning recommended approval 6–0; staff recommended approval as well. Mayor Eddie Allen opened and closed the public hearing after confirming there were no registered speakers. As this matter was before the council as a first reading, no final ordinance adoption occurred at this meeting; staff noted building permits will be required before construction.
