Library, Parks & Rec outline summer schedule: reading challenge, concerts, camps and adaptive programs

City staff presented the library and parks & recreation summer schedules and participation highlights. Amanda Cawthon, services manager at the library, said the annual summer reading challenge opened May 26 with registration on Beanstack and prizes including 3D printers and local gift cards. The library's summer kickoff is scheduled for May 30 with family events and multiple makerspace activities planned through June and July.
Josh Rodrigue, recreation manager, reviewed Parks & Rec spring and summer programs: more than 18,000 participants engaged across offerings this spring; Live at Lakeline averaged about 1,300 attendees per concert; Parks & Rec hosted a regional beatball tournament for visually impaired athletes with 64 players; and the department will offer 115 swim-lesson sessions along with new camps such as Power Speak (public speaking) and Combat Robots. Rodrigue highlighted inclusive programming and sensory retreat zones for large events.
Council members thanked staff and asked a few clarifying questions about programming and logistics; staff noted details and encouraged community participation.
