Resident urges council to prioritize Oakdale drainage repairs after recurring sinkholes

Gary Caesar, a Bellaire resident, used his allotted five minutes during public comment to ask a council member to formally present a petition requesting reconstruction of drainage and street work on Street Block 2 of Oakdale. "I'm here to request a member of council to take up the flag to propose to the council a petition which we formally put together for the reconstruction of the drainage systems and the Street Block 2 Of Oakdale," he said, describing years of subsidence and a recurring sinkhole that requires frequent asphalt patches.
Caesar told the council the block has been repaired repeatedly — "every 3rd year they have to come in and put another foot of asphalt down" — and said city crews currently pump standing water by hand after storms. He asked a council member to sponsor placement of the block on the city's prioritized works list so the street receives a permanent reconstruction rather than recurring temporary repairs. The mayor acknowledged the request and said staff have been hearing similar reports from other neighborhoods as the city advances its pavement condition assessment and future CIP planning.
