Jonathan Schroeder outlined NHGIS time‑series table products that address both changing geographic boundaries and changing attribute categories across censuses. He explained two integration approaches — nominal integration (matching by name) and geographic standardization to fixed target units — and emphasized the importance of starting from the smallest feasible units (blocks or block‑parts) when standardizing long‑form or tract data.
Schroeder said standardized time series are produced from block‑level sources and include modeled uncertainty bounds: "Our standardized time series currently go, 1990 through 2020 censuses for 2010 census units," he said, and demonstrated an example where modeled block allocations produced upper and lower bounds for tract estimates. He also described crosswalks and interpolation weights that allow reallocation between vintages (1990↔2010s, 2000↔2010s, 2020s↔2010s) and noted new 2000↔2020s crosswalks were imminent.
