County approves policy holding landlords responsible for animals abandoned by renters

Laurens County commissioners voted unanimously on May 5 to adopt an Animal Control Policy that ties responsibility for stray animals to rental property landlords when animals are abandoned by tenants.
County Administrator Bryan Rogers told the board staff had found a large number of stray animals resulted from renters moving out and abandoning pets. Under the adopted policy, landlords may be charged a fee associated with required veterinary care and transport bills when animals are left behind. Commissioner Brenda Chain moved adoption of the policy; Commissioner Kevin Tanner seconded and the motion carried with all voting in favor.
