Vernon County seeks Knowles-Nelson grants and interest-free loans to buy two ~80-acre tracts

The Vernon County Board on April 15 authorized two applications to the Wisconsin Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant Program and interest-free County Forest Project loans to acquire two roughly 80-acre parcels in the Towns of Webster and Jefferson (Resolutions 2025-24 and 2025-25).
County Forester Nick Gilman presented both resolutions, which note that acquisition price will be set by appraisal and that a 0% DNR loan could be repaid from timber-sale revenues. The resolutions describe conservation and recreation goals, intended perpetual county-forest status under state law (s. 28.10 Wis. Stats.), and potential grant cost-sharing of up to 50% of acquisition price.
Both resolutions were adopted on voice votes; one recorded that most voted in favor with some nays heard. The county will proceed to apply for grant funding and the interest-free loan and must comply with DNR rules if awarded funds.
